The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday with the leaders of non-teaching staff unions of Nigerian universities over the crisis sparked by the sharing of earned allowances recently released to the universities by the Federal Government.
Mr. Adamu agreed to meet with the Joint Action Committee of the unions in Abuja, two weeks after the unions communicated him on their grievances over the sharing of the allowances with their academic colleagues.
The aggrieved unions are Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union, NASU, and National Association Academic Technologists, NAAT.
They have been on strike since December 4, leading to inactivity and disruption of services at many universities.
The N23 billion Earned Allowances was released to the universities in fulfilment of one of the resolutions reached to address end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
But the three non-teaching unions rejected the prescribed sharing ratio of 11:89 percent between them and ASUU respectively.
According to the correspondence dated December 15, Tuesday’s meeting will address the concerns raised by the aggrieved unions in their November 30 letter to the minister.
